Singaporean Qualifying: Gaps closing as night falls...

On the floodlit streets of Singapore, the usual hierarchy threatened to be disposed of, as teams who have shown weakness and lack of pace, through the first half of the season, delivered fantastic performances. As we approached the final top ten shootout, things appeared to settle down, but Q1 was certainly dramatic. The Ferrari's looked very strong, whilst Gutierrez, in the Sauber, spent a short time in second place and Force India's Hulkenberg held pole for a time. Whether it was simply a case of tyre differences or the track gradually rubbering in, the first session of qualifying was uncharacteristically exciting.
Both Q2 and Q3 were as predictable as ever, but the third session threatened to throw everything in to disarray. Both Hamilton and Rosberg deserve credit for pulling out all the stops in the closing minutes of the top ten shootout, because both of them had struggled throughout the weekend. It was revealed that Mercedes had new brakes, coming to Singapore, and in fairness that was glaringly obvious. Rosberg over shot one of the corners, after a lock up in the first few moments of Q1, which was uncharacteristic for Nico, at least at that stage of a qualifying session. Lewis also locked up a few times, the rear end of his race car looking very loose.

Ferrari might might show some good pace during the race, because with Raikonnen's engine problem, right near the end of Q3, we may have been robbed of a challenge to Mercedes, who eventually locked out the front row. It certainly feels like the chasers are closing in on the Silver Arrows, even though they won't be able to make a dent in their Championship lead, this late on. One promising aspect of qualifying, was the impression that the cars were all struggling for grip, around the twenty-four turns of the Singaporean street circuit. With it's treacherously placed walls, the race promises some costly mistakes, with so few stages of the season remaining and the competition hotting up.

Spanish Qualifying: Mercedes, Mercedes, Mercedes!

It was The Mercedes story again, in qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix. There were high expectations for the other teams being able to catch up with the Silver Arrows, as we approached the first of the European races, but that failed to materialise. Hamilton and Rosberg were a full second faster than third place Ricciardo, in the Red Bull. We may find ourselves ignoring the Mercedes cars again, as they power away from the rest of the field, to seal the victory. Perhaps if somebody can get past them, away from the lights, then the race at the front might be a little closer.

The other teams are extremely well matched for pace, with Williams, Ferrari, McLaren and Force India all thrashing it out for the same grid positions. Out of all of those teams, Force India appeared to be the weakest, dropping out of Q2. Its a shame, because their progress has been impressive over the last few seasons, but that progress seems to have ground to a halt in the opening races of 2014. It wasn't only Force India who were struggling. It appeared that Caterham's progress at the start of this season also hit a speed bump, as they qualified twentieth and twenty-first. The only driver they out-qualified was Pastor Maldonado, who managed to throw his Lotus in to the wall, after only a couple of laps of the first session.

There were two red flag periods during qualifying. The first one was due to Maldonado's excursion in to the wall. The second came as a result of much more exciting circumstances. Reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel crawled out of the pits, near the beginning of Q1 and stopped just after the first chicane, with an electrical fault. It's the second time Vettel has had to drop out with technical difficulties and Christian Horner hit the nail on the head when he said "it's character building". Sometimes it's quite entertaining to observe the way the race engineers and drivers use the team radio to manipulate the race officials. Hamilton tenuously attempted to accuse Vettel of blocking him, which Sebastian countered with apologies directly aimed at Hamilton.

It was the second red flag that produced a good old fashioned end to Q1, with over half of the drivers leaving their final fast laps until the last couple of minutes. They fought out the final top ten positions, but there was no question of Mercedes being abe to secure the top two grid slots. Once again they look unbeatable. Williams are looking very strong and are bringing their fight closer and closer to the front runners. Perhaps they will be able to do what Red Bull have so far struggled with, and challenge the dominant Mercedes team in the coming races.

United States Grand Prix: where were the Stetsons?!

Sebastian Vettel is on top of the world, his dominance is unrivalled and his achievements are already historic. He broke yet another record today to become the first driver to win eight grands prix consecutively. The emotion was clear, up on the podium, and before that through Seb's team radio. There was an outpouring of praise and love from Vettel, broken up with sobs and tears. Sebastian looks utterly invincible as the season approaches its conclusion.

Mark Webber, on the other hand, had another frustrating race, in this his penultimate grand prix. He had yet another terrible start, finding himself slipping back behind Romain Grosjean and then Lewis Hamilton. He was later able to get past Hamilton but was unable to overtake Grosjean and gain the second step of the podium. The frustration was clear for all to see, in his face and his mannerisms. A combination of not making the most of qualifying, not being able to make more of his second position on the grid, and the fact that his season isn't proving to be a fairy tale send off, is obviously taking its toll on the Aussie.

The vast majority of the race was as dull as dishwater. There were very few passes and very little incident, the only real excitement coming on the first lap. Adrian Sutil was unaware of Pastor Maldonado moving up on his left hand side and moved over in to his path. As he clipped Pastor's front wheel he was spun around and was powerless to stop his Force India car from being wrecked against the barrier. The incident resulted in a safety car, but once the race got back underway all action went out of it. The DRS zones were relatively ineffective and drivers didn't seem to want to commit to anything risky or daring, at least not until the final few laps.

Any action there was, occurred in the middle of the pack and mainly between the Ferrari's and McLaren's. The final laps threatened to be extremely exciting, but it was all a bit of an anti-climax. In the final couple of laps Mark Webber lost touch with Romain Grosjean as the tyres on his Red Bull car went off, whilst Alonso passed Hulkenberg with a fantastic move, but Hulkenberg was unable to fight back again.

The biggest controversy of the weekend was the absence of Stetsons. I was looking forward to seeing those hats on the podium and without them the American Grand Prix was lacking. Hopefully next year we will see the return of the Stetson!
